CNC Speargun Manufacturing
Making a quality speargun by hand takes practice and patience. When I first started building prototypes by hand, I found out quickly that it was very difficult to make any two spearguns identical. Even with sturdy jigs and fixtures, it still takes a steady hand to push the wood through the machines at a constant rate. The quality of cut was mediocre at best and would vary greatly from gun to gun. I also found that if I'd try to make a gun in haste, Murphy's Law would almost always catch up to me. Believe me, its very frustrating to go 95% complete on a speargun only to screw it up in the end. Human error, my worst enemy.
I was in search of a repeatable manufacturing process that would eliminate as much human error as possible. Computer Numerical Control (CNC) was my answer. CNC machines are tremendous tools, and if harnessed effectively, will make thousands of parts quickly, efficiently, and with the same exacting precision each and every time.
I wasn't after an industrial size machine. The output of an industrial size machine was overkill for my application and the cost of a decent machine was beyond my financial reach. Undiscouraged and still confident that this technology would benefit my business and expand my design possibilities, I decided to take the CNC leap. I quit working on spearguns for six months and focused my attention on designing and building a custom CNC router table to my own specs.
What you see on this page is the end result. And so far, this machine is meeting my expectations. It does most of the hard work that goes into a well built speargun. Unfortunately I'm still stuck with laminating, sanding and finishing, the dirtiest jobs of all.
All my gun models start from computer blueprints and come to life using CNC. This is now my preferred method of engineering and building guns. I've borrowed this widely used technology in the manufacturing industry and applied it to spearguns. I truly believe this will set me apart from other wooden speargun manufacturers.
